Tennessee's Children's Digital Protection Fund:What the Meta Settlement Can Pay For

On this page
Last updated October 30, 2026. No spending plan has been published. The General Assembly and the Governor decide appropriations.
How much Tennessee gets
Tennessee's maximum share of the Meta settlement is $751,922,691.13 [1]. About $529 million of that is guaranteed. The rest depends on the settlement's contingent payments, which require other platforms to settle [3].
The Children's Digital Protection Fund
In 2026, Tennessee enacted SB2061 (Public Chapter 1114), which created the Children's Digital Protection Fund in the state treasury. Money the state receives from legal claims over how social media, online gaming or other digital technology affects minors' mental health must be deposited there [2]. The law limits the fund to these uses [2]:
- Mental health supports, programs and treatment for minors
- Research on how social media and technology affect minors
- Criminal and civil law enforcement resources on those harms and on exploiting minors through technology
- Education about how social media and technology affect minors' mental health and wellbeing
- Deposits to the K-12 mental health endowment fund
- Suicide prevention for minors
Who decides?
The Attorney General won the money, but appropriations rest with the General Assembly and the Governor [1]. The fund's governing rules, a spending plan and a timeline haven't been published [1]. The 2027 legislative session is the first chance to appropriate the money.
Reaching Tennessee families offline
Two of the allowed uses, education about social media's effects and youth suicide prevention, are typically carried out partly through public awareness. Place-based options in Tennessee include:
- Elementary schools for parents of younger kids, rounding out K-12 reach.
- High schools, middle schools and colleges
- Pediatric and primary care offices, in a network of 7,500+ pediatric offices,, including staff lounges for providers
- Community and recreation centers, where teens and families spend after-school and weekend time.
- Daycare and childcare centers
- Gas stations and convenience stores, from Memphis to rural East Tennessee
