Mississippi Meta Settlement Funds:$189 Million, With Youth Mental Health First

On this page
Last updated October 30, 2026. The Legislature still decides the specific programs, starting with the 2027 session.
How much Mississippi gets
Mississippi's guaranteed share is about $189 million over ten years. It could rise to about $270 million if Snap, TikTok and YouTube also settle with the states [1]. Meta will also pay about $6.1 million under the related Cambridge Analytica settlement, and the AG's office says all of it will go to the Department of Mental Health for youth mental health programs [1].
The Attorney General's plan
In a consent decree filed in Hinds County Chancery Court in September 2026, Attorney General Lynn Fitch set the following yearly amounts, starting in January 2027 [1][2]:
| Agency | Per year | Stated purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Department of Mental Health | $6.8M | Mental health programs "targeting but not limited to youth 12 through 18," including through cooperative programs with K-12 schools |
| Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks | $6M | Playgrounds, parks, courts, fields and outdoor recreation for youth |
| Department of Education (with MDHS) | $6M | Afterschool and school-break learning programs |
For the rest of 2026, all payments go directly to the Department of Mental Health for the same youth purposes [1].
Who decides the specific programs?
The Legislature. The AG's office has said that "the Legislature still directs how the money will be spent" and that the office will work with lawmakers on ideas in the upcoming session, in consultation with the Governor and the AG [1]. Lawmakers can spend two initial payments in the session that begins in January 2027 [1].
Why this matters for youth outreach
The plan names an agency, an age group (12–18) and a delivery channel (K-12 schools), which is unusually specific. Any public awareness that supports these programs, such as helping families find services or promoting crisis lines like 988, will depend on choices by the Department of Mental Health and the Legislature. The plan doesn't specifically set aside money for advertising or awareness campaigns.
Place-based options for reaching Mississippi teens and parents include:
- Elementary schools for parents of younger kids, rounding out K-12 reach.
- High schools and middle schools, which match the 12–18 focus.
- Pediatric offices (7,500+ nationwide) for parents, plus clinic staff lounges for providers.
- Community and recreation centers, where teens and families spend after-school and weekend time.
- Gas stations and convenience stores, which reach rural communities across the state.
- Daycare and childcare centers for parents.
- Substance abuse treatment centers for family-support messaging. Formats vary by center.
