Alabama Social Media Settlement Funds:TikTok, Meta and What Comes Next

On this page
Last updated October 30, 2026. Alabama has not announced a spending plan for either settlement. We'll update this page as decisions are made.
Alabama is the only state so far with two youth social media settlements. It reached the first-ever state settlement with TikTok in September 2026 [1], and it's part of the multistate Meta settlement announced in August [3]. Together, the guaranteed portions alone come to more than $228 million for the state: $100 million from TikTok for restitution and remediation, plus about $128 million guaranteed from Meta [1][4].
The Alabama TikTok settlement
- When: announced September 25, 2026, days before trial. The Montgomery County Circuit Court approved the consent decree the same day [1][2].
- Money: at least $100 million to the Attorney General's Office for "restitution and remediation" (due by November 9, 2026), plus $16.2 million for attorneys' fees and litigation costs, for about $116.2 million in total [2][5]. Alabama can receive up to $300 million total if enough other states reach qualifying deals with TikTok. Extra tiers vest at 10, 20, 30 and 40 states, each within set time windows [2][5].
- Teen protections in Alabama: a two-hour daily limit, "productive pauses," a midnight–6 a.m. restriction, no notifications overnight or during school hours, stronger age assurance, a ban on cosmetic filters for teens, and a default non-personalized feed [1].
Alabama's share of the Meta settlement
Under the multistate Meta settlement, Alabama's guaranteed share is about $117.3 million over ten annual installments, plus a one-time Cambridge Analytica-related payment of about $10.8 million. That makes about $128.1 million guaranteed, and up to about $178.7 million if the contingent payments are triggered [4]. Alabama's payment instructions are set in a separate Alabama consent judgment, so its timing may differ from other states [4].
Who decides how Alabama spends the money?
- TikTok funds: the $100 million is paid to the Attorney General's Office for use "in the Attorney General's sole discretion for any lawful purpose" [5]. The AG's chief counsel said the money "will probably go to the general fund," and that the office hopes to work with legislative leaders on investments in "schools and resources and just online safety generally" [2].
- Meta funds: we have not found a public Alabama spending plan as of October 30, 2026.
- What to watch: the 2027 legislative session, and any agreement between the AG's office and legislative leaders on youth mental health or online safety programs.
Reaching Alabama teens and parents offline
If settlement dollars go toward youth mental health, online safety or crisis-line awareness, the media plan will need to reach families beyond their phones. In Alabama, place-based options include:
- Elementary schools for parents of younger kids, rounding out K-12 reach.
- High schools and colleges for students and staff.
- Pediatric offices and primary care clinics, plus clinic staff lounges, to reach parents and providers.
- Community and recreation centers, where teens and families spend after-school and weekend time.
- Daycare and childcare centers for parents of young children.
- Gas stations and convenience stores across rural and metro Alabama.
- Substance abuse treatment centers for crisis and family-support messaging. Formats vary by center and are mostly posters and take-ones.

Frequently asked questions
01How much is the Alabama TikTok settlement?
At least $100 million for restitution and remediation, plus $16.2 million in fees and costs, and up to $300 million total if enough other states reach qualifying agreements with TikTok.
02How will Alabama spend the TikTok settlement money?
No plan has been announced. The money goes to the Attorney General's Office for any lawful purpose at the AG's discretion. The AG's chief counsel said it will probably go to the general fund, and the office hopes to discuss uses like schools and online safety with legislative leaders.
03How much will Alabama get from the Meta settlement?
About $128 million guaranteed (ten installments plus a one-time payment), and up to about $179 million if contingent payments are triggered.
04Is the TikTok settlement part of the Meta settlement?
No. Alabama's TikTok settlement is a separate case. On its own, it does not trigger the Meta settlement's contingent payments, which require Snap, TikTok and YouTube all to be bound to comparable terms in a state.
