What Is OOH Advertising? Out-of-Home Definition | PlaceBased
Out-of-home (OOH) advertising is any advertising that reaches consumers while they are outside their homes — including billboards, transit ads, street furniture, cinema, and place-based venue media. It is the umbrella category that contains every physical advertising format encountered in public space.
The Out of Home Advertising Association of America (OAAA) groups OOH into formal formats: billboards (the largest segment), transit, street furniture, place-based, and cinema. In 2025, U.S. OOH revenue reached a record $9.46 billion, up 3.6% year over year and extending the category's growth to 19 consecutive quarters. Within that total, digital out-of-home (DOOH) accounted for 36.3% of spend and grew 10.5%. OOH is valued for being unblockable, brand-safe, and physically present in the real world — advantages that have grown more important as digital ad fraud and ad-blocking have eroded the open web.
