What Is Dwell Time in Advertising? Definition | PlaceBased

Dwell Time

Dwell time is the amount of time an audience spends in a venue or location where an advertisement appears. It is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — metrics in place-based and out-of-home media, because it directly shapes how much opportunity a message has to be seen, processed, and remembered.

High-dwell environments are what give place-based media its attention advantage over roadside formats. A driver passes a billboard in seconds; a patient sits in a waiting room for 20 minutes, a student spends hours on campus, a truck driver lingers in a travel-center lounge. Longer dwell means more chances for exposure at higher attention, which is why high-dwell venues often justify higher CPMs. Dwell time also informs creative: high-dwell placements can support more information, while low-dwell placements demand a single, instantly legible message.
